Cover Girl & the Lemon

It felt very strange to discover I was on the front cover of the Yorkshire Post, especially when I didn’t know until I was in the Whitby Co-Op just checking to see if I was mentioned in the weekend magazine!

There are always fascinating articles about artists and makers. From the Sheffield based metal smith and sculptor Francisca Onumah whose work is currently on show at Harewood House in ‘Radical Acts: Why Craft Matters’ to the miniature embroideries of Serena Partridge- artist in residence at Selby Abbey. The weekend magazine has a history of revealing those stories and enabling its readers to discover so much more about the things that are made in this county.

The United Nations General Assembly has formally declared 2022 as the International Year of Glass to celebrate the heritage and importance to this material in our lives. After making work through a time of restriction there is an overwhelming amount of exhibitions that are taking place that encourage us to not just look through glass but marvel at its beauty too. I suppose this is where my work plays a role- like a form of modern alchemy it distils the beauty of the natural world into miniature sculptures that can be held in the palm of your hand.

The article talks about my making process and inspiration and includes some wonderful photographs of me making work- a rare behind the scenes look at my practice. I particularly like the one of me cleaning a cast glass lemon in the garden. A verdant studio space, what it doesn’t show is that my rabbit was trying to eat the photographer’s shoelaces at the time.

The article is still available online titled ‘the Whitby glass artist whose art mimics life’.
